Bureau Of Labor Statistics Web Site Hacked

WASHINGTON, DC, U.S.A., 1999 JAN 27 (Newsbytes) -- By Robert MacMillan,
Newsbytes. The Web site for the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor
Statistics apparently was developed under a bad sign. After posting
statistics prematurely twice in two months, the site was hacked yesterday,
a BLS official confirmed.

The hackers, the Wall Street Journal reported, broke into the site on
Friday afternoon and posted several messages, including the self-evident
"You've been hacked." The site then was taken down and corrected.

A spokesman for the Labor Department was not immediately available to
provide details of the hacking.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics earlier this month released the December
producer price index statistics 12 hours earlier than the scheduled
posting time. In November, the bureau released several sections of the
October employment report on the Internet.

A spokesman for the bureau said that the January premature posting was the
result of a computer error, whereas the November posting was due to a
staffer who thought the information had been cleared for release.

In the wake of these earlier mishaps, Labor Department chief Alexis Herman
has promised to review the Web posting procedures the entire department
uses.

The hacking incident though was a relatively low-level incident. Similar
attacks have been perpetrated on the US Information Agency as well as the
Pentagon within the last year.
