Sandia National Laboratories - California Site - has intiated a program by
which students taking courses in information protection can gain
experience with real-world attacks and defenses while at the same time
helping to characterize and build improved defenses against tools used to
attack computer systems and networks.

The "Colege Anti-Crackers" program provides access to Sandia's HEAT
computer network which contains more than 70 computers whose sole purpose
is cyber attack, defense, and analysis. Students who are taking classes
from authorized institutions are granted access for supervised experiments
with off-the-Internet attack tools. The results are published to the
Internet in the form of standard descriptions of attacks, detection and
differentiation techniques, and patterns for pattern-based intrusion
detection systems.
