Hacker sentenced to five months in federal prison

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A flamboyant computer hacker who claims he helped put
superhacker Kevin Mitnick behind bars has been sentenced to five months in
federal prison for violating probation.
Justin Petersen, 38, was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Court Judge
Stephen Wilson., who warned: ``If you commit another crime, you face up to
seven, eight, 10 years.''
``I suggest you become a little less charming and a little more
hard-working,'' the judge said.
Petersen, was known for his computer skills as well as his love of Los
Angeles night life, despite losing his left leg below the knee in a
motorcycle accident.
The Lincoln, Neb., native who called himself ``Agent Steal'' pleaded
guilty in 1993 to federal crimes committed in California and Texas,
including credit card fraud that involved stealing data from a credit
information firm.
He said his sentencing was delayed while he worked as a government
informant, going to computer conferences at FBI expense to spy on other
hackers, including Mitnick, the only hacker to make the FBI's most wanted
list. Mitnick faces an April 20 federal wire fraud trial in Los Angeles.
Petersen spent 41 months in prison before his release last year. But
authorities said he violated terms of his supervised release, including
staying away from computers while not at work, before leaving a Los
Angeles-area halfway house in August.
