Russia hands down first conviction to computer hacker
MOSCOW, Nov 25 (AFP) - A Russian court has handed down the country's first
conviction for computer piracy, the daily Kommersant reported Wednesday.
Pavel Cheiko, an 18-year-old computer student, was given a five year
suspended sentence for illegally obtaining 11,000 dollars in equipment
from a US company over the internet.
Cheiko purchased the equipment using a fake credit card number he created
with software he also found on the internet.
The young hacker, who began playing with computers at the age of 12,
resold the material after he received it.
The case is a first for Russian judicial authorities who recently set up a
Federal Security Services to fight computer fraud.
