BEIJING (Nov. 25) XINHUA - A so-called firewall system developed by the
Beixinyuan Corporation to protect Novell Network subscribers was released
here today, marking the introduction of the first domestic computer system
designed to deter the mounting incursions by hackers.
"We developed the system after thorough analysis of the loopholes in
the Novell Network," said Beixinyuan General Manager Lin Hao. The
corporation is one of China's major anti-virus software developers.
The system, which features a device similar to the so-called black
boxes on aircraft, maintains a network login-in record offering clues to
incursion attempts by hackers, according to Lin.
Novell, a major international network producer, produces operating
systems widely used by governments, securities exchanges, enterprises, and
various institutions throughout the world.
"Development of the system is highly significant for efforts to enhance
the security level of China's computer network," said Qi Jin, an official
with the Supervision Bureau of Public Information Network Security under
the Ministry of Public Security.
"The actual incidence rate for hacking is unavailable," said Qi, adding
that "the situation is nonetheless getting worse."
Several major computer hacking cases involving losses of hundreds of
millions of yuan were reported this year, up sharply on figures for recent
years.
Two young hackers in Yangzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province,
reportedly gained access to a local bank's computer system and transferred
200,000 yuan from a local bank by hackering into the bank's computer
network.
