FBI busts hacker who sold clandestine accounts on PageNet system
DALLAS (July 30, 1998 7:28 p.m. EDT
http://www.nandotimes.com) - PageNet Inc., one of the largest wireless
message providers, said U.S. federal agents arrested a San Diego man
Thursday who allegedly set up unauthorized voice mailboxes and paging
accounts on its system, costing the company about $1 million.
PageNet said it had noticed abnormal calling patterns during a routine
check of its system and monitored the man's calls for nine months. The
company then turned over the evidence to the Federal Bureau of
Investigation. No paying customers were hurt by the alleged scam, the
company said.
The man allegedly tapped into a PageNet phone number used for training
independent sellers of PageNet services, a company spokesman said. From
there, the man hacked into the PageNet system, the spokesman added.
