04Aug98 INDONESIA: HACKERS COMPROMISE 45 INDONESIAN WEB SITES.
A Portuguese hacker collective has defaced 45 Indonesian web servers in
protest over conditions in East Timor. On Saturday, August 1, visitors to
sites such as Indoglobal Business Services, an internet service provider,
and Indowebdesign.com, a design firm, were confronted with a demand for a
referendum on freedom for East Timor and the release of jailed Timorese
leader Xanana Gusmao and other political prisoners. Most of the hacked
sites have since been restored. According to hacker site AntiOnline, the
Kaotik Team spared Indonesian universities as a gesture of solidarity with
students, who have also been protesting government atrocities. East Timor
was invaded by Indonesia in 1974, shortly after Portugal had liberated its
former colony.
