Gas Companies Examine Hacker Threat
By Declan McCullagh (declan@well.com)

Most people don't think of gas companies as prime targets for hacker
attacks -- defense contractors and software companies usually figure
higher on the list. But gas companies are starting to figure out that
they're vulnerable to computer attacks, and this makes them a little
skittish. Gas companies control resources with an awesome potential for
mass destruction. In 1995, for example, when a routine subway construction
dig in Korea hit a gas pipe, over 100 people died.

To swap reassurances and war stories, representatives from about 60
companies gathered in Washington, DC this week for a "cyber-security"
confab sponsored by the Institute of Gas Technology. At risk from hackers,
terrorists, or disgruntled employees are electronic systems that do
everything from directing well drilling to regulating pipelines and
compressor stations.
