A Singaporean man who illicitly used another person's password to
surf the Internet for free and download obscene material has been
fined in the first case of its kind here, a report said Wednesday.
Colin Phan Siang Loong, 21, was fined a total of $1,530 for
using an Internet account without permission, possession of
obscene films, and possession of a film not approved by
Singapore censors.
Prosecutors said Phan was tutoring a student between March and
May 1997 when he found out the user name and password of his
pupil's elder sister, the Straits Times said.
He ran up $244 dollars in Internet charges after using the
account to chat with his girlfriend in Canada. Phan also
downloaded obscene films and stored them in the hard disk
of his computer in violation of Singapore law.
Phan's troubles are not over.
The report said he could lose his freshman slot in the school
of law at the National University of Singapore because of
the case.
The court rejected a defense plea for him to be put on probation
because a conviction could disqualify him from taking up law.
