EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AP) [7.11.98] - A hacker broke
into the computer system at the Elgin Air Force Base but was
quickly spotted and cut off, officials said.
The hacker has not been identified, and the Air Force Office
of Special Investigations is looking into the break-in.
The June break-in was the first at Eglin, which develops and
tests new bombs, missiles and other weapons.
As the hacker tried to move deeper into the computer system,
automatic security measures detected suspicious activity and
the hacker's access was shut down, said Dave Sears, a computer
scientist with the 96th Communications Group.
The hacker got into a Silicon Graphics work station, a
sophisticated version of a personal computer, but did not
enter any larger computers, such as a supercomputer used
to simulate explosions, Sears said.
