Canadian Charged With Breaking Into U.S. Government Computer Files
SUDBURY, Canada (May 13, 1998 9:03 p.m. EDT) - A Canadian faced charges
Wednesday that he used a computer in the basement of his parents' house to
break into U.S. government files, including NASA's.
Jason Mewhiney, 21, appeared briefly before a judge in a Sudbury, Ontario
court and was informed of the 27 charges against him.
Working with U.S. authorities, Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested
Mewhiney at his parents' house on April 1 and charged him with "illegally
hacking into the United States government computer systems and in one case
causing extensive damages."
In addition to NASA, Mewhiney allegedly tapped into the computer files of
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Police say Mewhiney also penetrated the computer systems of Canadian and
U.S. universities.
Mewhiney, who is free pending trial, declined to speak to media.
"He's a bright young man," his mother said as she left the court.
At the request of the prosecution, the case has been postponed until June
10.
