A recent hacker attack on the Pentagon has some CIOs questioning their own
corporate network security. To help ward off the threat of a security
breach, IT executives can turn to a newly published guide from the SANS
Institute dubbed "Windows NT Security: Step-by-Step."
The 36-page guide lists the potential security problems of NT servers and
the actions required to resist a network invasion. The list of 85 action
items in eight deployment phases was compiled by security experts from 77
large user organizations, including Andersen Consulting, BankBoston Corp.,
Exxon Chemical Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., Merck and Co. Inc., and the
Student Loan Marketing Association.
The eight phases include: machine setup, safe file system and emergency
repair disks, setting registry keys, establishing password controls and
secure account policies, auditing, networking and Internet security
settings, other actions required during system setup, and monitoring
security and responding to incidents.
The guide is priced at $19 or is free for members of the SANS Institute
(www.sans.org), a cooperative research and educational organization, in
Bethesda, Md.
