SIEMENS NIXDORF: Using hacking methods to protect against hackers: Network
protection services
MAR 19, 1998, M2 Communications - Siemens Nixdorf's IT Networks Line of
Business show-cased a special kind of service offering at this year's CeBIT:
The Firewall Test Center, where the user's existing security facilities can be
emulated and given a thorough security check-up. In this "penetration test,"
Siemens Nixdorf security experts simulate the way intruders attempt to gain
access to data and processes. In doing so, they use the same methods and tools
that hackers use.
The purpose of the testing is to identify security gaps in the network. The
procedure clearly illustrates that if confidentiality and integrity are to be
preserved on the network, today's organizations face brand new security
challenges that cannot be satisfied by conventional password-based
authentication methods and simple encryption. Suitable methods and highly
secure, easy-to-administer solutions that can be tried out at the Firewall
Test Center include strong encryption, central user administration under the
trust center principle, smartcard-based authentication, as well as biometric
identification.
In the test procedure, Siemens Nixdorf experts simulate an attempted intrusion
over networks, usually the kind that are not only open to privileged users.
The accesses from enterprise networks to the Internet are typical points of
intrusion.
However an intrusion test consists of more than merely analyzing the network
configuration. First and foremost, it includes a conscientious,
customer-specific analysis of the results, as well as an individual, manual
follow-up test. Typically, the procedure results in the development of new
test routines that can be used to specifically ferret out a suspected
weakpoint.
