San Francisco venture capitalists Halsey Minor and Ron Palmeri don't
wait for entrepreneurs to come to them - they look for big ideas that
have the power to disrupt lethargic industries and then find people to
carry them out.
Most recently, they've set their sights on the Internet security
business, which, despite selling millions of dollars in products each
year, hasn't been able to stem the tide of malicious software code.
San Francisco startup OpenDNS is trying to change the industry landscape
by giving away its computer security service. As an added benefit, it
speeds up the Web experience. And all the time, the service is becoming
smarter with input from 50,000 of its 4 million users - some of them
network administrators - who suggest new features and identify Internet
sites to avoid.
OpenDNS is typical of the companies funded by Minor Ventures, which
installs them in its Fremont Street offices and offers coaching and
administrative support.
