A former network administrator for the US District Court in Alaska has
been sentenced for launching a series of denial-of-service attacks
against a New York District Court Web site.
According to information released today by the FBI, Anchorage resident
Scott Dennis was sentenced Jan. 19 to three months in jail for
launching three denial-of-service attacks against the US District
Court for the Eastern District of New York.
Prosecutors alleged Dennis launched the attacks because he was
distraught over plans to allow more users into a restricted e-mail
list server, and that he purposely overwhelmed the Eastern District's
server with e-mail messages to prove it was vulnerable to outside
attacks.
In addition to his 3-month jail sentence, Dennis was sentenced to
three months home confinement and ordered to pay $5,300 to the New
York Court System and the two Internet service providers he used in
launching the attack, GCI and Internet Alaska. Under the terms of the
sentence, Dennis must to allow authorities to monitor his computer
activity, and upon release must perform 240 hours of community
service.
Dennis could not be reached for comment.
